New Mesh Raises Questions For Developers
April 24th, 2008 Posted in News, SEOWeb developers are questioning the latest move and commitment of openness in Microsoft’s Live Mesh service that is created to bridge the offline and online world. This new service was introduced at Web 2.0, which is going to ease user’s device and applications to create a smooth framework. Microsoft has claimed that this will be launched for use on Windows, Mac and mobile phones, and will be using open standards.
However, developers are requesting more information and detail about the commitment for openness. Certainly, some entrepreneurs feel that this has promise, but the concern is over openness and Microsoft’s ability to control the volume of people’s information. “It’s what they have always been trying to do which is own the pie. I think the main thing with Live Mesh is to benchmark all the talk about “open”, states developer JC Herz of Batch Tags.
Currently this is still available as a demo and so there is no concrete way of determining whether this has proven useful. The launch of the Mesh has not yet been made available to Mac, however, during the launch audience members had noticed the Apple icon included into the slideshow. Many developers have taken a back seat on whether it will in fact work on a Mac.
Others were not so impressed by the demonstration such as Yahoo associate Sam Pullara, who stated, “To me it looks a lot like dotMac for the Apple and I think it will be a lot harder to execute well because Windows machines are just so different from one another.”
Officials of the Microsoft Live Mesh are maintaining their commitment to the openness and further urging developers to come on-board. The aim of this program was to build something that could be used by a wider audience, with the ability of using it on any device at any one time. A private core group (with a view to have public testing displayed later on during the year), is currently testing the Live Mesh.
